The Innovation and Technology Central Laboratory is a research and innovation centre that the Gruppo Italcementi is setting up on the Kilometro Rosso campus. Developed by Richard Meier, the project covers a surface of around 11,000 sq m, of which 7,500 sq m will be occupied by research laboratories. The building will be arranged on a “V” shaped modular plan. The north wing overlooks the motorway, alongside the red wall. It will house labs, offices and a science library. The East wing will contain a café, conference rooms, administrative offices and reception areas. The entrance atrium is a large space, animated by a ramp leading to the upper floors and offering picturesque views over the landscape. The frontage features large expanses of glass and surfaces in TX Aria ® white reinforced concrete. This innovative material by Italcementi was previously used by Meier for the Dives in Misericordia church in Rome. It allows aesthetic features to be preserved while contributing to lowering air pollutants.
Cutting edge materials, photovoltaic, solar and geothermal systems have all been used, making the ITC Lab a building with highly sustainable technological content. It is hoped that the project, in partnership with the Energetics Department of Milan Polytechnic, will achieve the title of “Partner” in the European “GreenBuilding” programme, as well as the American “LEED” certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
