The new Bergamo site of the Istituto Mario Negri will open in the Kilometro Rosso park by the end of 2008. The building has a compact shape and rectangular plan, arranged on a structural framework of 7 x 9.30 metres. The three above-ground floors each have a surface area of around 1,176 sq m. They will house meeting and video conference rooms, offices and biochemistry labs. The basement floor will house laboratories for experimental research on small animals, along with the necessary animal pens, technological rooms and storage space.

The bearing structure is in reinforced concrete and iron, while the floors are made from “prédalles”- type prefabricated slabs. The laboratory and offices spaces are divided by partition and storage walls, and are all outside-facing.

The frontage has a geometric design which mirrors the module of the structure. In order to adhere to the guidelines given by Nouvel, the architecture features unbroken facades in structural glass, placed on two corners of the building, and large openings screened by sunshades. The solid surfaces are covered in prefabricated sheets made from a blend of fine quality aggregates and high-strength white cement.

On the coping of the building, a sequence of steel columns supports a horizontal surface of metal panels. It has a deep overhang around the entire perimeter of the building, protecting the facades beneath it.
