Istituto Mario Negri (www.marionegri.it)
The Mario Negri Pharmacological Research Institute is a private, independent scientific organisation that is committed to not-for-profit biomedical research.
Established in Milan in 1963, the Institute has three main objectives: to carry out scientific research projects, to train new graduates and to disseminate the research results at all levels. Today, the Institute employs more than 800 researchers. By operating without constraints, the Institute has made available to the public sector the sort of efficiency usually only found in the private sector, and has done so in the public interest.
The Institute has two facilities in Bergamo: the Negri-Bergamo Laboratories and the ‘Aldo and Cele Daccò’ Centre for Clinical Research. Both of these facilities endeavour to marry experimental research with clinical research.
The research carried out by Negri-Bergamo concentrates on the study of kidney disease, the immunology of organ and cell transplants, clinical pharmacology and the pharmacology of molecular medicine, bioengineering and certain aspects of tumours. The Daccò Centre, in contrast, specialises in the study and treatment of rare diseases.
The Negri-Bergamo laboratories will be transferred to Kilometro Rosso, and expanded in the process, with instrumentation and services such as electron and confocal microscopy, sterilised rooms for cell cultures, laboratories for studying cellular and molecular biology and instrumentation for pharmacological dosing all set to be located within the facility at the Park.
These activities will be supported by an infrastructure based on computerised systems for the collection, analysis and integrated processing of data and images. The inter-disciplinary character of modern-day biomedical research will promote the sharing of expertise between the biomedical and scientific research sectors.
