Kilometro Rosso: timeline of important events.

  • June 16, 2002: architect Jean Nouvel unveils his design to the Bergamo Municipal Authority.
  • November 4, 2002: the project receives rapid approval.
  • May 7, 2003: the project is officially approved in the presence of several illustrious guests: President of the Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi; Minister for the Universities and Scientific Research, Letizia Moratti; Governor of Lombardy Region, Roberto Formigoni and numerous other leading academics, scientists, businesspeople and institutional representatives.
  • January 22, 2004: the first Research Centre at Kilometro Rosso is opened. The centre is the result of a joint venture between DaimlerChrysler and Brembo, and employs a total of around 100.
  • April 29, 2004: an agreement is signed with the Mario Negri Institute (a pharmacological research institute) for the construction within the Park of 4,400m2 of new laboratories that will play host to around 130 employees.
  • June 1, 2004: the first part of the Brembo Research Centre opens its doors. Brembo is a world leader in the design and manufacture of braking systems for cars, bikes and commercial vehicles. Initially, 250 are employed at the centre, with the figure reaching 450 a few months later. 
  • November 17, 2004: an agreement is ratified for the siting of ITCLab (the Innovation and Technology Central Laboratory) within Kilometro Rosso. This is the new Research Centre for the Italcementi group, a world leader in construction materials. The centre will go on to employ 170.
  • March 15, 2005: signing of the Declaration of Intent between the Lombardy Regional Authority and Kilometro Rosso. In the declaration, the Regional Authority recognises that the activities of Kilometro Rosso are in the public interest, and commits to supporting the Park’s initiatives and objectives through the definition of actual and potential opportunities for supporting the Park that are aligned with existing and/or future policies and mechanisms.
  • June 15, 2005: A.P.S.T.I. (Associazione dei Parchi Scientifici Tecnologici Italiani / Association of Italian Science & Technology Parks) accepts Kilometro Rosso as a member.
  • October 21, 2005: Kilometro Rosso is one of the nine winners of the Italian National Work Prize (voted for by more than 500 companies) in the ‘Institutions’ category, in recognition of its ‘Innovative contribution to research and science’.
  • December 22, 2005: the Kilometro Rosso Strategic Committee is set up. Members of the committee include leading names from the worlds of academia, science, business and the media.
  • April 27, 2006: Kilometro Rosso becomes part of the A.P.S.T.I. Board.
  • May 22, 2006: Kilometro Rosso is officially accredited as a ‘Centre for Research and Technology Transfer – CRTT’ by the Lombardy Regional Authority.
  • September 1, 2006: an agreement is signed with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Kilometro Rosso becomes the first Science Park to be officially recognised as an Associate Member of M.I.T – the world’s most prestigious engineering and technology institute.
  • December 6, 2006: ceremonial laying of the foundation stone of ITCLab, the new research centre for the Italcementi group.
  • December 14, 2006: the Intellimech Consortium is established. The consortium sees the coming together of numerous highly prestigious companies operating in a range of industries in order to create a Mechatronics Centre of Excellence based at Kilometro Rosso.
  • February 7, 2007: a partnership agreement is signed with the University of Bergamo. This highly regarded University will create its own centre within the Park to focus on mechatronic engineering, bioengineering and the training of entrepreneurs and managers. Also planned is the creation of an incubator for spin-offs of the academic research conducted in synergy with the Park.
  • May 7, 2008: Kilometro Rosso and Assosvezia (Italian-Swedish Chamber of Commerce) initial an important international collaboration agreement in the field of technological innovation, especially management, progress and integration among Research&Development centres.
  • June 9, 2008: Kilometro Rosso makes official the settlement within the Science Park of seven new partners, that are (in alphabetical order): “DiDue”, “Jacobacci&Partners”, “Medicina e Lavoro”, “Petroceramics”, “PG&W”, “Uniheat” and “Warrant Group”.
