JOiiNT LAB – Robotic Intelligence League Bergamo is the joint laboratory founded as a result of the agreement between the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) and Intellimech, the mechatronics research consortium promoted over 10 years ago by Kilometro Rosso and Confindustria Bergamo. JOiiNT LAB works on the themes of robotics and mechatronics for industrial applications: the activities take place in the Genoa headquarters of IIT and on the Kilometro Rosso campus, with the aim of strengthening the country’s industrial system through innovation.
Intellimech and IIT are supported in this initiative by Confindustria Bergamo, Kilometro Rosso, and the University of Bergamo. Directly supporting the joint laboratory are nine companies belonging to the Intellimech Consortium: ABB, Brembo, Cosberg, Elettrocablaggi, Fassi, Giovenzana International, SDF, SIAD and Valtellina. The 5.2-million-euro investment will employ a variety of professionals, including 15 new researchers in the joint laboratory, with the support of a dozen engineers, highly trained specialists, and Ph.D. students from Kilometro Rosso and companies, for a total of around 25 workers in all, under the supervision of IIT researchers working in the field of advanced robotics.
The main objectives of the joint laboratory are the identification, development, and application of technologies in the field of advanced robotics developed by IIT with the following aims: to transfer them to the technical and productive realities of the industrial park of “Sistema Bergamo”; the training of high-level professional figures thanks to the transmission of IIT’s scientific and technological skills; the enhancement of the hi-tech industry of the province in order to promote its dissemination at national and international level. An expected effect is also the strengthening of specialist skills and their spread throughout the entire territorial system. This joint laboratory, the eighteenth for IIT, is the second outside the research institute’s institutional premises and is unique in terms of its size and strategic importance, making it the ideal basis for IIT’s projection towards supporting industry in Lombardy and the rest of Italy.
